Actor Alec Baldwin alleges wrongdoing against ‘Rust’ film crew members in lawsuit

Actor Alec Baldwin on Friday filed a lawsuit in California against several people associated with the film “Rust”, according to a complaint obtained by CNN.

Actress Halyna Hutchins was shot and killed by an actor last October during rehearsals for the movie, which was being filmed near Santa Fe, New Mexico.

The lawsuit is the first legal action in which Baldwin alleges wrongdoing against someone in connection with the shooting.

Baldwin, who is listed as a defendant in the 2021 case by the manager of the script “Rust”, filed a complaint against production designer Hannah Gutierrez Reed, assistant director David Halls, assistant armorer Seth Kenney, a prop and equipment store. the company Kenney owns, along with prop manager Sarah Zachry.

“More than anyone else on this set, Baldwin has been unfairly blamed for this tragedy. Through these Claims, Baldwin seeks to clear his name and hold the Cross-Defendants accountable for their misconduct,” he said.

“This tragedy occurred because live ammunition was provided on set and loaded into the gun, Gutierrez Reed did not carefully inspect the ammunition or the gun, Halls did not carefully inspect the gun and declare the gun safe before handing it to Baldwin, and Zachry failed to report that Gutierrez Reed acted recklessly and was a safety risk. to those around him,” the complaint alleges, adding that Baldwin did not know those facts, but the defendants did.

“These Cross Supporters are the professionals who work for those on set, including Baldwin, to keep the set safe. Everyone on set, including Baldwin, expected and trusted them to do so. Hutchins would never have ordered Baldwin to point the gun in his direction and pull the hammer back if he thought there was the slightest possibility that it was loaded; Baldwin, who shared the same mental state as Hutchins during that critical period, would not have acted under such circumstances,” the lawsuit claims.

Baldwin is seeking “compensatory, nominal, compensatory, and punitive damages” for court fees, costs related to the lawsuit, and other relief to be determined by the Los Angeles Superior Court, the cross-complaint says.

In an August 2022 interview with CNN, Baldwin blamed the film’s Gutierrez Reed and Halls, who gave him the gun.

Jason Bowles, Gutierrez Reed’s attorney, told CNN on Friday: “He shot Halyna, and it’s his fault, not anybody else’s.”

Asked in August for comment, Hall’s attorney accused Baldwin of shifting the blame to others.

Kenney’s lawyers have previously denied responsibility for the shooting.

CNN reached out Friday to attorneys representing Halls and Kenney for comment on the lawsuit. CNN is seeking contact information for Zachary’s attorney.
