With Matchday 5 in the books, 11 teams have booked their places in the last 16 of the Champions League as 16 places are narrowed down. Some of these are familiar faces but others are a little unexpected. Porto, LiverpoolBayern Munich, Real Madrid, Club Brugge, NaplesChelsea, Borussia Dortmund, PSG, Benficaand Manchester City have booked their places but what do the other teams need to do to join them on Matchday 6?

First, let’s look at the tiebreakers if the teams finish tied in points. Things are a little different than a general league game. The first tier is the score of head-to-head games between tied teams. If the tied teams are still equal on their points in head-to-head games, it goes to goal difference in head-to-head games for the teams. In the end, the advantage would go to the team that scored the most points. An example is what we saw Barcelona and Inter Milan. Inter beat Barca 1-0 at home and drew 3-3 on the road, giving the Italian side four points at the head and Barca only one after the draw. That means if they finish level on points, Inter go through.

If more teams are tied after going through all the preliminary stages, there will be goal difference in all group games. This is followed by goals scored in all group stage matches, away goals scored in all group matches, wins in all group matches, and then wins in all group matches. If that still doesn’t do it, we come up with the penalty points for each team and the UEFA team coefficient.
