Don Taco Village

Don Taco Village – Authentic Mexican food in downtown Covington. My husband and I really enjoyed our meal. We also had a chance to speak with the owners, who told us that they travel back to Mexico every month for their herbs and spices. A good, family owned, legitimate business with all the proper licenses for the Parish of St. Tammany. They will also be serving from their newly opened Taco Truck on Hwy 22 in Mandeville. If you want authentic Mexican food, this is worth a stop.

Food is not worth the money. The tacos are small and the chips and queso were terrible. This is possibly the worst Mexican food I have ever had and probably the most expensive you will find.

Don Taco Village

I would give Don Taco Village zero stars if I could. I’ve eaten there enough times to know that no experience is perfect, but the number of disappointing episodes at this restaurant is staggering. We went to Don Taco Village for lunch and wanted to hit the road, so we arrived before noon. The restaurant was empty and full of smoke. At first it smelled strange, but after sitting in that environment for a while, my eyes started burning. Since it was our first time, we sat down with the menu to decide what we wanted before ordering at the counter. After going to the counter, we probably waited at least five minutes for the lady to come out of the kitchen and help us. We ordered two biriya tacos, one Don Taco style grilled taco, medium chori-queso, one street corn and two drinks. We wanted horchata and melon, but they said they didn’t have it. We settled on two cucumber-lime drinks that were delicious. Based on their posted menu prices, our total before tax should be $26.50. Instead, our total was $42.00. The lady had to answer the phone and take the order while calling us, so we didn’t get a chance to check the price difference. The taco was tasty but very small. There was no chorizo โ€‹โ€‹in the chori-queso and it was watery and tasteless. The chips were fried. When our food was delivered, the lady said street cereal was on the way. This time the line was almost out the door and it was this one woman taking orders, answering phones and busing tables. Finally, the street cereal arrived after we finished the rest of our food. It was quite average. Why is this area so popular? The food is very expensive (considering they raised the prices and didn’t update the menu) and the service is not good. STAY AWAY!!!

Taco Truck Throwdown

Not good at all. I was so excited to try beer on the North Shore and I won’t be going back. Smoke and fire inside. We had watermelon tacos and street tacos. The biriya was burnt, hard and oily. Really inedible. The woman asked how everything was. and when I politely told him what was bothering me, he replied sarcastically, saying, “Yeah, these are barbecue tacos, that’s what they are.” It is not the first time I have received biriya and I know how they are prepared, but irresponsibility or the knowledge that we are not satisfied with the food gave me the wrong way. He didn’t bother to ask if we wanted anything else, a refund or even apologize for the burnt food. Save yourself the disappointment and try somewhere else.

I’ve been looking for a legit Mexican restaurant with authentic biriya tacos and I’m glad I finally found this place. I was so happy that I got 1 of each of their tacos and they were all good! Birria tacos and chorizo โ€‹โ€‹tacos were favorites. The tamales were good, but bigger than I expected. It was my first time trying lotes and it was delicious. My friends also enjoyed the snacks. I will definitely come back here with friends.

Everything was good. I have been looking for a birria taco and finally found them. My husband and I enjoyed our meal. He will definitely come back.

This is a REAL GOAL!! These are authentic Mexican tacos and soups. And very tasty. The service is great, I love that this is a small family run place. Everything I’ve had so far has been fresh and delicious. The last time I had anything that came close to the taste they were having was in Mexico. I highly recommend trying Don Taco. Oh, did I mention it’s a great value? You can eat like a king for less than $10.
