German, Latin American Christmas Markets to Kick Off Holiday Season

Two local Christmas markets are betting that right after the hustle and bustle of Thanksgiving, it’s the perfect time for Atlantans to start their holiday shopping with globally connected experiences.

The Atlanta Christkindl Marketwhich is becoming bona fide tradition after six years in town, kicks off again this Friday in the Buckhead Village shopping district.

The traditional German Christmas market, which includes booths like those that gather in town squares across the street every winter Germanylanded in this spot for the second consecutive year after returning from a pandemic-era hiatus in 2020.

The event started with a modest 12 stalls at Atlantic Station in 2016, then moved to Centennial Olympic Park before going to Buckhead Village last year.

Along the way, the number of stalls has risen to more than 60, offering German (and some international) cuisine as well as traditional ornaments, toys and crafts, gifts and more. More than 50 vendors have signed up for this year’s edition, and Santa is scheduled to stop by on weekends for photos. The event usually includes performances by cultural groups and choirs from across the Southeast.

Dignitaries will also visit the market, which anchors the city’s German community in the winter months and helps raise funds for the German-American Cultural Foundationwhich supports German language and culture programs locally throughout the year.

Although the market launches on Friday, a “grand opening” will take place on Saturday, November 26, at 12:30 p.m. be held with comments by Melanie Moltmannconsul general of Germany in Atlanta.

Latin American Association’s Second Annual Christmas Market

A few weeks after the ongoing German market launches, the Latin American Association will host its second annual one-day Christmas Market, which aims to raise funds for the organization while benefiting Latina entrepreneurs in the metro area.

The Dec. 10 event runs from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and includes handmade jewelry, traditional Latin American hats, accessories, desserts, decorations and more, all made or sourced by some of the more than 70 local women participating in the Advancing Juntas (Progress Together) empowerment program. Besides physical products, some of the female entrepreneurs also offer services from marketing to photography and real estate.

“The Christmas market was a big hit last year,” said Santiago Marquez, president and CEO of the LAA, in a news release. “It’s a wholesome way for people to shop for the holidays, pick up unique gifts, and also support local Latinas who are building promising businesses.”

Open to the public, the event will be held at the Latin American Association’s Atlanta Outreach Center at 2750 Buford Highway.
