Bob Defrang couldn’t be happier. The hype from the Clippers didn’t dampen his praise and recognition. “I can’t make a good hippie,” says 93-year-old barber Steve Aiblings as he cuts his hair.

At 7 a.m. Saturday morning, a shaggy-haired man walked into Steve Lake Stevens Barber Shop as the first customer in more than two months. Aibling opened his shop on Saturday for a World War II veteran before accepting the public’s much-needed haircut on Monday.

DeFrank’s sister-in-law, Rebecca DeFrank, got up early to drive the Lake Stevens man to an early meeting. Governor Jay Inslee on Friday gave Snohomish County the chance to enter Phase 2 – easing restrictions on businesses. Including hair salons. Many businesses have been closed for weeks as part of a nationwide “stay home, stay healthy” order aimed at preventing the spread of COVID-19.

Because of his age, Defrang is part of the population that is at high risk of severe complications or death from the coronavirus. As of Tuesday, Covid-19 has killed 153 people in Snohomish County.

“He didn’t leave the house except for two doctor’s appointments,” Rebecca Defrang said Saturday. She and her husband Dr. He helps and takes care of his widowed father-in-law who lives near the place where Robert DeFrank is also building their house.

Born in Port Angeles, Defrang was a thin kid who had just turned 18 when he joined the army in 1945. On Tuesday he sat down with Rebecca and they talked about his time in the army. A Private First Class in the 86th Infantry Division, he was in service with other units.

He spent 11 months in the Philippines, where he taught scouts. Later in Okinawa, Japan, Defrang expressed responsibility for the Japanese prisoners of war. He remembers the trip back through the Aleutian Islands on a warship as the hardest he had ever seen.

After the war, he spent 40 years at PenPly or Peninsula Plywood in Port Angeles, where he was a converter and became an assistant. He and his wife raised three children, Robert, Danny and Debbie. Lorraine “Rain” Defrang, his wife of 60 years, died in 2012.

Since 2003, when he moved to Lake Stevens to be near his sons, he was a devoted member of Lake Stevens Ebenezer Lutheran Church and American Legion Post 181.

Tom Thorleifson, head of the area, said Defrang was one of the few survivors of World War II. “We have lost many people in the last five years,” he said.

For 15 years, Defrang has been handing out poppy pins on Memorial Day weekend at the Tom Thumb store in Lake Stevens. The annual event raises money to support American Legion programs. He missed it this year due to a virus.

“He’s been asking for a haircut every day for two months,” Rebecca Defrang said Saturday as Iblings – wearing a mask and a plastic face shield – cut and trimmed her hooded client.

The event was very different from what has happened in previous weeks at The Stock Barber Shop in Snohomish. There, owner Bob Martin, 79, cuts his hair despite the national shutdown. His customers were covered in American flag coats, and Martino or most of his customers wore masks.

Both Defrang and Iblings followed the stay-at-home order, giving barber Lake Stevens several months of income. A grant from local small businesses will help her pay three months’ rent, Eblings said.

Clear plastic shower curtains hang between each station in the Iblings store, where barber chairs are spaced about six feet apart. Customers’ names are posted on a board inside, and people park in their cars outside until their turn is up. “Bob is at the top of the list,” Barber said Saturday.

“The days of having 15 people in the store are over,” said Eblings, who has been at his nearby Frontier Village location for 11 years. His store was located in downtown Lake Stevens for 20 years.

Children of the Great Depression, DeFrank’s generation knew sacrifice. His brother, Donald Defrang, who died in 2012, was wounded fighting in Europe during World War II and received a Purple Heart. Another brother, Kenneth Defrong, served in the Navy during the war.

Bob DeFrank’s wife’s 19-year-old brother, James Champ, was one of the 687 sailors killed in the sinking of the USS Juno. During the Battle of Guadalcanal in 1942, a light ship was hit by a Japanese torpedo. Juneau’s loss is best known to five brothers, the Sullivans of Iowa, who died on a ship in the South Pacific.

Bob Defrang faced a lot – in times of depression, war and other epidemics – and lost. On Saturday, Ebenezer was a happy customer who told his barber that he was watching Lutheran services online. “Virtual church, it works well for me,” he said.

Aibling told DeFrank that it might take another cut to get his thick hair back. “Boy, I’m glad I’m out,” Defrang replied

When it came time to pay, the barber asked his first customer to donate the money to the American Legion.
