Rayo Vallecano – Real Madrid summary: score, goals and highlights, LaLiga Santander

Rayo Vallecano taught Real Madrid a lesson in strength and discipline

On a night many expected Real Madrid to take the expected three points, it was clear from the first kick of the ball that such a task would be very difficult to complete.

Playing at home, Rayo Vallecano were all over their city neighbors for the entire game. Often down the left flank – Dani Carvajal’s responsibility – Isi Palazon and Sergio Camello pulled the strings all night, with a combination of good work ethic and classy play in tight spaces. However, mention must be made of Fran Garcia and Santi Comesaña. Indeed, it was the two who scored the first goal of the night after some complex play on the left. Comesaña met Garcia’s cross right in the penalty area, and at the end of the leg, guided the ball into the bottom right corner of Courtois’ goal.

From there, los ‘Franjirrojos’ continued to pile on the pressure and indeed it looked like they could increase their lead, but against the run of play Madrid equalized through Luka Modric, who convert the penalty after Marco Asensio is fouled. Shortly after, the home side found themselves behind after Éder Militão produced a fine header from a corner to beat Stole Dimitrievski in the Rayo goal.

That moment seemed to incite Rayo to even stronger levels. A few minutes later, it was Alvaro Garcia who leveled the scores with a powerful shot from the left side of the Madrid goal. Although Courtois managed to get a hand on the ball, the power of the shot was too great and so he could deflect it into the roof of the net. Finally, just over 20 minutes after their coach left – Andoni Iraola was red-carded on the bench – Rayo made a defensive switch to seal the game. On top of that, they were rewarded when winger Dani Carvajal handled the ball clearly in the area against Isi Palazon. Oscar Trejo would be the man responsible for the resulting penalty, and ironically he had to take it twice after the referee awarded Courtois a penalty for an early move. .

Madrid for them was not necessarily poor in the game, but they were surprised to some extent by the wave after Rayo’s pressure. One has to wonder if Rayo haven’t put the entire league on edge with their incredible win. They went into the game saying they had no reason to fear Madrid and it really was a case of ‘it’s said, it’s done’ on the night. With that, we wish you well and we hope you enjoy our coverage of Rayo Vallecano vs Real Madrid which ended 3-2 in favor of Rayo.
