A gray seal that became a celebrity in Massachusetts in September after it crawled out of a lake and into the city’s police station is now starring in a new children’s book.
The gray seal, named Shoebert, spent a week at Beverly’s Shoe Pond, attracting hundreds of spectators. Initial rescue efforts were made in the lake to capture Shoebert until the seal emerged from the lake and wandered off to the Beverly Police Station.
Former WCVB photographer Stanley Forman, and his wife Debbie, spend every day at the lake capturing Shoebert’s joy.
“One time, I stood here, I know it’s crazy, he talked to me. He was smiling. He had a beautiful face,” said Forman.
After nine days, Shoebert turned himself in to police, was safely transported to the Mystic Aquarium in Connecticut, where he was examined for any injuries and later released back into the ocean.
But Forman, who has won Pulitzer Prizes for his work in the past, could not get the seal out of his mind.
“I miss Shoebert,” Forman said. “I miss getting ready in the morning and all that. It was just motivation.”
Forman said it was his inspiration to come up with “Shoebert’s Great Adventure,” a children’s book written from the perspective of a gray seal as it attracted viewers and made Shoe Pond home.
The book is on sale now and is available for purchase at Beverly Farms Sweet Brewing Company or online.
